In a traditional single-medium sand filter, hydraulic backwashing stratifies the bed with the smallest grains on top. Consequently, most suspended particles accumulate only in the top 2–3 inches, creating a tight surface layer and spiking head loss rapidly.
Anthracite has a lower specific gravity (1.4–1.6) compared to silica sand (2.65). Because of this density differential, a coarse layer of anthracite settles above the finer sand layer during backwash. Coarser floc particles are trapped inside the deep anthracite void spaces, while fine turbidity is polished by the underlying sand bed — distributing solids across the full bed depth.
